AC Sizing
What AC power?
Explanation
Sizing an Air Conditioner (AC) correctly is vital. Undersized, it runs constantly without cooling. Oversized, it cycles on/off too fast (short cycling) and doesn't dehumidify. ### BTUs Cooling power is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). - 1 Ton of cooling = 12,000 BTU. ### Rule of Thumb Generally **20 to 25 BTU per sq ft** for a standard room (8ft ceiling). - Bedroom 150 sq ft: 5,000 BTU. - Living Room 400 sq ft: 10,000 - 12,000 BTU (1 Ton). ### Adjustment Factors Add power if: - Sunny room / South facing windows (+10-20%). - Kitchen (+4,000 BTU). - High ceilings (>8ft).
Examples
- Room 200 sq ft: ~6,000 BTU.
- Sunroom 200 sq ft: Needs significantly more, maybe 10,000 BTU.
FAQ
Portable vs Window/Split?
Window or Mini-Split units are much more efficient. Portable units vent air out, pulling warm air into the room from cracks.
What is SEER?
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. Higher is better (13 is standard, 20+ is excellent).
