Explanation

Building a brick or block wall requires precision. This calculator accounts for the mortar joint thickness, which adds up over large areas. ### Standard Sizes - **Standard Brick (US)**: Approx 8 x 2.25 x 3.75 inches. - **Cinder Block (CMU)**: Standard is 8 x 8 x 16 inches. - **Joint**: Usually 3/8 inch (10mm). ### Wall Type - **Single Skin (Stretcher Bond)**: Thickness = width of brick. Common for veneers. - **Double Skin**: Thickness = length of brick. Structural walls. ### Wastage Always order **5% extra** for breakage during cutting and transport.

  • 100 sq ft wall using standard blocks. Approx 1.125 blocks per sq ft. Total = 113 blocks.
  • 100 sq ft wall using standard bricks. Approx 7 bricks per sq ft. Total = 700 bricks.

How much mortar?

One 80lb bag of mortar mix lays about 40-50 standard bricks or 10-12 blocks.

Should I wet bricks?

Yes, especially red clay bricks in summer, to prevent them from sucking moisture out of the mortar too fast.
