Car CO2 Emission
Estimate carbon footprint.
Explanation
Calculating your carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. This calculator estimates emissions from your travel. ### Orders of Magnitude (per passenger) - **Train**: 5-10 g CO2/km. The eco-champion. - **EV Car**: 30-60 g CO2/km (depends on grid electricity). - **Gas Car**: 100-150 g CO2/km (solo), but divide by 4 if carpooling! - **Plane**: 150-250 g CO2/km. Worst on short hauls (takeoff is fuel heavy). ### Offset A tree absorbs about 50 lbs (25kg) of CO2 per year. - A round trip NY-London (1 ton CO2) requires 40 trees for a year to offset.
Examples
- Trip of 500 miles (800km).
- Train: ~10 lbs CO2.
- Car (Solo): ~200 lbs CO2.
- Plane: ~300 lbs CO2.
FAQ
Is train always better?
Generally yes. Even diesel trains are more efficient per passenger than cars or planes.
Manufacturing impact?
EVs have a higher manufacturing footprint (battery) but break even after 20-30k miles of driving.
