Topsoil Calculator
Calculate amount of topsoil needed.
Explanation
Gardening requires soil! Whether filling raised beds, leveling ground, or filling a hole, this calculator gives you the volume and weight of topsoil needed. ### Soil Density Soil fluffs up when dug and settles later. - Topsoil density: **1.2 to 1.3 tons/m³** (approx 2000-2200 lbs/cubic yard). - Potting Mix (bagged): Much lighter, approx **0.4 to 0.6 tons/m³**. ### Calculation Volume = Length x Width x Depth. Watch out for settling: fresh soil will settle by about 10-15% after rain. Order a bit more.
Examples
- Raised bed 6ft x 3ft, 1ft deep. Volume = 18 cu ft (0.67 cu yards). Need approx 1500 lbs topsoil.
- To raise 1000 sq ft by 4 inches: ~12 cubic yards (approx 15 tons, a dump truck load).
FAQ
Topsoil or Potting Soil?
Topsoil is natural dirt (heavy). Potting soil is organic mix (light) for nutrients. Often mixed 50/50.
How many 40lb bags?
Depends on the mix, but a cubic yard is roughly 50-60 bags of standard soil.
